How to Sew a Doll Baptism Gown

This baptism gown comes as a kit and is finished very quickly with a few simple seams. It fits on 18" dolls, or can be used in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atrium as a display piece for the baptism lesson.

Kit Includes (purchase here)

  • Fabric with red Greek style cross printed on the back
  • Neckline reinforced with interfacing and satin stitched in red
  • Doll sized clothes hanger

Equipment Needed (not included)

  • Fabric scissors
  • White thread
  • Sewing pins
  • Sewing machine or hand sewing needle

Sewing Instructions

First: Cut

  1. Cut out the gown along the black line. Cut just inside the black lines so they don't show through the hem.
  2. Cut out the neck hole right along the edge of the stitching.

Second: Hem

  1. Sew a double-fold 1/4" hem at the ends of the sleeves and the front and back bottom of the gown.

Third: Close the sides

  1. Fold the gown in half with the right sides facing (the gown is inside out) so that it forms a "T".
  2. Sew a 1/4" seam from the cuff to the hem, along the side of the T. Repeat on the other side.
  3. Make a 45* snip into the armpits, but don't cut the stitching.
  4. Finish the interior seam with a zig-zag stitch right on the edge of the fabric. Set it at about 2.5mm wide by 2.5mm long.

Turn right side out and enjoy!
