How to Sew a Zipper Pouch

Make your own zipper pouch with an inspirational Orthodox quote! This is a perfect place to keep items for daily devotional journaling, to hold items for a traveling icon corner, or any other special items. We have several designs, and these beginner-friendly instructions (along with a great video by Spoonflower) work for any of our designs or any fabric you have.

Kit Includes (purchase here)

  • Fabric: pre-printed panel with outside and liner fabric and a wristlet strap
  • Zipper: color matched to the zipper pouch design
  • Thread: color matched to the zipper pouch design

Equipment

  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing pins
  • Sewing machine or hand sewing needle
  • Turning tool (chopstick, knitting needle, etc)

Sewing Instructions

First: Prepare the fabric

1. Wash and dry the fabric to soften and pre-shrink. You can treat the raw edges of the fabric so they don't fray in the wash, or let it fray. The easiest treatment is to quickly sew along the edge with a zig-zag stitch. Wash with phosphate free detergent on gentle cycles. Dry on gentle with no dryer sheet.

2. If the fabric is wrinkly or has any hard creases, iron the fabric on the reverse side. Use hot with steam.

3. Cut out the five sections from the fabric panel.

Second: Prepare the Wrist Strap

1. Fold and iron the long rectangle in half, then fold each side into the first fold so that the strap is four layers and the long raw edges are covered.

Third: Make the Pouch

1. This video tutorial is one of the best I've seen, and is also very short! Use this video to create the pouch. To add in the wrist strap, add it after the zipper has been attached to the four pieces of fabric (outer and liner).

 Enjoy!
