Instructions for Sewing
the Baptismal Garment
for the Orthodox Christian
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd church school curriculum

Making this set will enhance the objectives in the "Baptism" lesson and give the children an almost identical representation of the real baptismal garment they see in church. This set is designed to fit an 18" doll, but the doll is not usually used in the atrium. This is a "beginner" sewing project to outfit your church or school's atrium with an Orthodox Christian baptismal garment. If you do not already have the kit to make this set, you can find here.
Kit Materials Included
- Pre-printed garment fabric with neckline sewn
- Hanger

Supplies Needed
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- Basic sewing tools
Sewing Instructions
-
Iron the fabric smooth, but be careful around the neck. The light interfacing will melt if you go over it with a super hot iron. Iron the neck quickly or on a synthetic setting only if it's needed.
- Cut out the baptismal garment, cutting just inside the black line.
- Cut out the fabric from inside the neckline. Trim right against the stitches.
- Sew a 1/4" rolled hem on the bottom edges of the front and back.

- Sew a 1/4" rolled hem on the edges of the left and right sleeves.
- Fold the garment in half so that it is inside out. Sew the left and right sides with a 1/4" seam allowance, pivoting at the armpit. Clip the seam allowance in the armpits.
- Finish the inside seams with a zig-zag stitch over the raw edges (or use a serger). Stop and restart on both sides of the armpit snip.
- Turn right side out and iron if desired.
